How to Improve Your Writing 3 Tips
How to Improve Your Writing 3 Tips Long before I made a living as a writer, I was passionate about writing. Now that Iâm a full-time author, people frequently ask me how to improve their writing. My advice is simple: 1. Sit in the Chair These four words changed my life. For a long time, I was an aspiring writerâ"which meant I didnt write much. Sure, I aspired daily, but I didnt make writing a priority. Instead, I spent time passively parked in front of glowing screens: watching TV, perusing Facebook, checking email. I didnt become a writer until I developed a writing habit. People dont learn how to write via osmosis; it takes work. So forget word count or page count, and dont worry about creating the perfect writing spaceâ"focus instead on sitting in the chair distraction-free, writing for at least an hour a day. Do this for a month and you will improve more than you thought possible. 2. Start a Blog Perhaps the best thing I ever did for my writing career was find an outlet through which I could express myself: blogging. My sole regret is I didnt start sooner. Its such an inexpensive and effective way to communicate with, and add value to, other people. Plus, the consistency of blogging strengthens your writing habit. I wrote about my entire step-by-step process here: How to Start a Successful Blog Today. And its easier than you think. 3. Kill Fear with Accountability For years I wanted to be a writer, but I was terrified to write. What if people judge me? What if my writing is bad? What if, what if, what if? Paralyzed by fear, I remained inactive and unproductive, always postponing until tomorrow. To overcome this fear, find an accountability partner: a spouse, sibling, coworker, or loved oneâ"anyone whoâs willing to help for 60 seconds a day. Then, report to your partner each day via email, and include: a) how long you sat in the chair, b) what topic you wrote about, and c) why it was a good or bad day for your writing. It takes less than a minute to send this email, and the benefits are disproportionately positive. Try it for a month: youâll watch your fear disintegrate. Utilitarianism: A Workable Moral Theory? Why or Why Not? Utilitarianism is one of the most commonly used ethical theories from the time it was formulated by Jeremy Bentham and John Stewart Mill in the nineteenth century. In his work, Utilitarianism, Bentham ââ¬Å"sought to dispel misconceptions that morality has nothing to do with usefulness or utility or that morality is opposed to pleasureâ⬠(MacKinnon, 2012, p. 53). To simplify the utilitarian principle, which is one of utility, one can surmise that morality is equated with the greatest amount of utility or good for the greatest number of people (MacKinnon, 2012). Also, with its orientation to the ââ¬Å"end or goal of actionsâ⬠(MacKinnon, 2012, p. 54), Utilitarianism thus, espouses the consequentialist principle, e.g., the evaluation of any human act lies not so much in the nature of the act or the drive behind the act but rather the result of the act (MacKinnon, 2012). The utilitarian promotion of pleasur e or happiness as the intrinsic good makes it akin to Hedonism or Epicureanism that holds ââ¬Å"mental delight and peace were the goods to be sought in life (MacKinnon, 2012, p. 54). In AD 122, Emperor Hadrian visited Britain and ordered to build a wall the Hadrianââ¬â¢s Wall to separate Romans from Picts and Scots. This also helped to minimize the threat to the Roman domain. Similarly, Shi Huangdi joined and strengthened the wall built by feudal lords, with the help of 7,000 people. The famous Great Wall of China was 5,000 km long and approximately 39 feet high, and was built to keep out the Huns and other tribes in Mongolia. Bonfires were used to alert soldiers of other parts of the wall if one part was suddenly attacked. Watchtowers were also constructed to watch the movements of people in and out of the wall. In my opinion, the Great wall was a lot more useful in controlling the empireââ¬â¢s border because it was higher and longer. Enemies could not easily breach in the defences. In addition, there were a lot more soldiers stationed in the Great wall than in Hadrianââ¬â¢s Wall. An efficient transport network allowed the emperors to access their empires easily and was therefore vital for the security of the empires. Both Emperors have improved the transport network of their empires. The Romans were the first people to build roads. Their roads were very high so if it rained, most of the water would run along the sides, not onto the road. The roads enabled soldiers to move quickly to areas of trouble, and to keep the rebellious barbarians under control. During the reign of Shi Huangdi, he built 6,800 km of new roads, including 5 major roads called ââ¬ËSpeedwaysââ¬â¢ linking the north, northeast, east and southeast of the empire. The new roads were wide and of the same width, allowing 6 horses to pass each time. This helped the army to move a lot quicker to revolting areas. In addition, Shi Huangdi also built canals to link the major rivers together, allowing people to transport goods more efficiently. Both Emperors were talented and undertook a lot of reforms to help them in keeping control of their empires. For example, Hadrian introduced administrative, financial, and legal reforms, which helped established a more efficient government. As for Shi Huangdi, he abolished feudalism, and established a centralized government. He also introduced a uniform code of law, standardized currency, weights and measures, the written language and the axle length of wagons and chariots. The school has two cafeterias in order to accommodate it's large student population, one cafeteria to provide for fifth and sixth graders, and another for seventh and eighth graders. Interesting enough, the different classes do not attend lunch together, in other words, seventh and eighth graders do not attend lunch together nor fifth and sixth graders. Again I assume this is strictly do to the large population of this school. I entered the school at the start of the day, I considered this to be to my advantage, therefor not standing out so much among the huddles of people gathered outside the school building. It can be said that the students appearances varied somewhat, but a whole it remained within a certain unspoken code. The girls wore their hair long-shoulder length or longer, and had it tied back in a pony-tail or very straight. Some were in skirts (slightly above knee level)-all were either corduroy or floral material. Most of the girls though were in jeans and hip length sweaters and wore tennis-sneakers or the clunky type shoes which are all the fashion now. All the girls I saw wore earrings, mostly the small dangling type and often they had two holes pierced. Most of the girls wore make-up, mostly lipstick and eye-shadow, although it was not excessive. The boys all seemed to be in clothes that were least five sizes too big. It consisted primarily of one of these two clothing options: extra-large sweater overlapping a thermal-type shirt, with jeans that were just short of slipping to the ground or extra-large flannel overlapping a thermal-type shirt, with jeans that were just short of slipping to the ground. A close second to this dressing trend for boys was the sweater and jeans/sweater and khakis style, although nowhere near as prominent. The clothing the students wore was an immediate indication to various social groups, being that it is a visual observation. It can be said that this is a common factor even in the adult world, but not once did I note a poorly dressed student socializing with a student that was in an athletic jacket or a student that was fashion-forward. It was during the lunch period that I figured I could make distinctions among social groups most accurately At first entering the cafeteria, it was much as I remembered, even much like college.
